Friday Afternoon
Dear Mom + Dad,
Another short note to my family back in Peekskill. As you probably know I sent you money home via air mail. A lot of the boys went on furlough and I loaned out $7 to a few boys I know and can trust. It is never good policy to lend money in the army but nine times out of ten you can tell the ones that will pay it back. I have faith in the ones I loaned money too as I have borrowed money from them. I never would lend out very much as you can never be sure.
I intend to get my haircut this afternoon. I intend to get a crew haircut. My hair grows so darn fast in this heat and as I very seldom ever go anywhere I’m going to have my curly locks shorn. I don’t like them but they are very convenient especially in a life like I lead now. I hope you don’t mind! Anyway you don’t have to look at me.
Tomorrow morning we have a full field inspection. I have to pitch pup tents and lay out all my junk on the ground in a display. You spend hours cleaning it and then you lay it around and it gets all dirty. Remember the time I use to have with the inspections at Camp Barkeley. It’s going the same here. How I hate those darn things.
I intend to take off for LA and Hollywood as soon as inspection is over tomorrow. I talked to the first sergeant and he virtually assured me that I would be off this weekend. Of course that all can be changed but at least it is fairly certain that I will get off.
I’ll probably skip the next few days and not write you as I will be busy enjoying myself. I’ll at least send you a few cards.
I’ve been expecting a letter from you as I haven’t received a long letter in quite awhile. I know there is a dearth of news but it is nice to hear from you. I wish you would write me a couple a times a week. Letters and news from the old home town mean a lot down here. Get after brother and make him write too.
It is a real scorcher here today. It is much hotter than usual. I’ve don’t mind the heat anymore as you become accustomed to it. When I feel it as I do today it must be quite warm.
I guess that completes everything for today. I’ll write again for sure on Monday and before if I get a chance.
