February 26, 1944 - Mission #1 -Augsburg, Germany

February 26, 1944

Dear Mom + Dad,

All these weeks of hanging around have finally brought me up to the climax yesterday. Yes, I've had number 1 over Germany and everything turned out fine. I flew it yesterday, the 25th and went to Augsburg, Germany and blasted the hell out of the place. It was quite a mission for our first one as it was one of the longest penetrations into enemy territory on record. The round trip was 1300 miles, most of it over Germany and France. Briefly, it wasn't anything like I expected and as it turned out quite easy except for a long ride. We were in the air 9 hours. I'll write you an airmail tomorrow and give you more details about it all. No.  1 is behind me and believe me it wasn't bad at all. –

I wish you could please note the change of squadrons. They moved us today to the 535th squadron. God knows why but there it is. All because of Jack, leaving us. Incidentally he is back again and is a ground officer, he will lose his flying status, as to just what he will do is undetermined. I imagine now that we are underway that they will start flying us regularly. It’s alright by me as I will get them over in a hurry. They're really not so bad period I'll see you soon.  Airmail tomorrow –

All my love

Bob

To Be Continued Again

Again, I'm jumping ahead a little. . . I want to get to his missions.
