December 31, 1943 - Blackouts Around Here

Date: December 31, 1943

Dear Mom + Dad,

I have just finished a stint of answering mail and believe me that is quite something. As you probably noticed officers are allowed to censor their own mail so mine is of course untouched. Reading some of them reminded me of the days when I used to correct kids papers in school. Some of those were much worse than the stuff my 5th grade kids put out. I went to town last night and attended a dance there. I met a few chicks and managed to get a date for tonight on New Year's Eve. I imagine it is going to be fun starting 1944 with a cute little English chick - the blackouts around here are really something. There are no lights anywhere after dark and you ramble around half lost most of the time. I am now just beginning to get on to the use of British currency which is very much different from our own monetary system. That's about it for now.

All my love

Bob
