January 15, 1943 - Officially an Upperclassman (& a letter from Kay!)

Friday Evening

Dear Mom + Dad,

Just after I wrote to you yesterday the orders came out on my class 43-H were to become upperclassmen today.  So I am now a proud possessor of the blue name tag and am an upperclassman officially.  It sure is a swell feeling to be left alone and to have a little time to myself.

Speaking of time I have a lot of that added too as we went on a different schedule of mess.  We eat our meals an hour earlier.  That makes our day actually end at 6PM instead of 7:30 as was before.  We even get an hour off in the middle of the day due to a lapse in our schedule.  I even went to an early show tonight.  We have to be in the barracks before 8:15 for call to quarters in which time we study.  I’ve been back 10 minutes now and it is only 8.  I’m in favor of this all around.  We even changed our mess hall and now eat at a much nearer place.  Things are beginning to pick up.

Your letter of Tuesday arrived today.  My mail is coming in regularly now even though the service is very poor.  I’m sorry to hear that you are not feeling well Mom.  I hope by this time you have snapped out of it and are back on the ball again.  I enjoyed reading about Joe Nichols, it makes me realize how lucky I am to be still here in this country.

I got a letter from Kay today and today and she tells me that the Delphic house is no more due to the lack of fellows.  The war has even stopped my frat form the duration.

Just what information have you on Basky going overseas?  I haven’t heard from him in weeks.  I figured his division would move out soon as he just got off of maneuvers in TX about the same time.  I finished mine in the desert.  My old outfit is scheduled to move and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have as I haven’t heard from any of the boys lately.  There is sure a lot of boys really going into foreign service.

I don’t know yet when the new class is moving in here but it will be either Monday or Tuesday.  We are supposed to have an open port on Monday.  I sure hope we get it as scheduled.  It will be good to go into town again and to have a little fun.

Well it is now call to quarters and I should study so I’ll close.

All my love

Bobby
