January 17, 1943 - Waiting Expectantly for Open Post Tomorrow

Sunday Evening

Dear Mom + Dad,

Well here it is on the evening of open post and I’m waiting expectantly for tomorrow to come.  It will be a pleasure to go to town and have a little fun for a change.  Our open posts run from 10 to 10 the same as the others I've had.  I don’t know yet just what I’m going to do but I’ll have a lot of fun.

I just got back from the movies and I saw “Stand By for Action”.  It was fair and I enjoyed it.  I had my first two tests today and I made out fine.  I got about 95 (estimate) in my navel identification.  Our code teacher sprang a surprise test on us today at six words a minute.  He caught quite a few and they have to stay here for open post and take a special class.  I managed to pass it and was lucky to slide by.  I was afraid I might get caught short but I wasn't.  You either pass or fail in code.  I’m passing so everything is O.K.  I’m just a little bit afraid of it but so far I am keeping up.  As I have said before I’m not quite satisfied but the wait is O.K.  It’s just one of those things that come to you after a while.  It is coming slow but sure.

Tomorrow we move upstairs into the upperclass haven.  Myself and my bedmate have our beds all chosen and we’re all set to move in and take over.  I think I told you we have double decker beds here.  They aren’t bad at all especially when you have the bottom one.

Well that is all for now.  I’ll write again after open post.

Love

Bobby

P.S.  I've been sending you the Tale Spinner.  I think it will give you an idea of our life.
