August 12, 1942 - Still Haven’t Received Pay

Wednesday Aft.

Dear Mom + Dad,

Your letter arrived today so I will sit down and answer it right away. I’m glad to hear you have made the final arrangements on the house. I can hardly wait until I can get home and see what it is like. It is about time you had a decent home and one you can call your own. I can imagine the time you’re having getting everything arranged and straightened out. I also hope you can move soon. Let me know about it when you do.

I still haven’t received my pay. It is getting rather aggravating now as this is the third day it is overdue. I sure hope they decide to pass it out to us before the weekend rolls around. But then why should I worry I’m a rich man now with the money that you have set aside for me. I intend to use it for going to school as soon as I get out of this mess. I sure hope it is soon as I want to go back to my normal life. I just guess I was never cut out for army life. I can’t get to like it no matter how much I try. I want a nice school teaching job and then I could be happy. Oh well all this is just idle speculation and will have to await world developments.

I intend to go to L.A. this weekend and have a little fun. It all depends on whether the pay comes in. I can get a pass unless something unforeseen comes up. I have guard duty tomorrow night and I have gone the complete cycle of duty all in one week. Thus, there is not much danger of my getting a detail for the weekend. It all hinges on the little problem of finance. I have plenty of money if I can only get what is coming to me. I have borrowed $15 so far and I don’t want to go in debt anymore. You need about $10 to take care of you in a satisfactory manner for a weekend and I don’t want to get myself $25 under. So if I don’t get paid I’ll have to postpone the trip. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Tell Brother to write me a letter sometime I’d like to hear from him once in awhile. I’ll even go as far as to answer it.

I’m going to go swimming this afternoon and as I want to get ready I’m going to quit. Write me soon and let me know about the letters of “recs”.

Love
Bob
