September 25, 1942 - Can’t Tell What’s Going On With Maneuvers

Friday Morning

Dear Mom + Dad,

I’m stealing a few minutes to write this I hope I can get it finished. Yesterday I got a letter from Russ. It was one of those V letters they get out. He is with a bombardier squadron working in a office that is located in the Hawaiian Islands. I was glad to hear from him and to know where he is. I intend to write to him right away and get it off as it will take some time for him to receive it. They surely sent him over in a hurry. He’s only been in the Army about two months and is over. I’m in almost 8 and no signs of seeing action. I guess it’s just the way breaks go.

I should get a letter from you today as per schedule. However we don’t get our mail until late in the evening so I’ll answer it tomorrow if it comes. I’ve been mailing you the few lines and taking it into the Blythe post office as I figure it will get there sooner. I hope it comes through all right.

I’ve been in town the last two nights. Blythe is a sad little town but at least it is a change from camp. I’m going into the show tonight. We are only 2 miles out from town and in that respect we are better off than we are at Young. It really isn’t so bad out here and I don’t mind it to much. Of course it isn’t pleasant but I manage to hold up under it pretty well. I was working in the operation room yesterday. You’re on duty for 24 hours and off for 48. Of course in those 48 you’re off you can get company duty. I manage to keep fairly busy. There is nothing to do in the operating room as we are not tackling anything like that out here now. Most of the time is spent hanging around and reading. I don’t go on duty again until Saturday.

These maneuvers would be interesting if I could just tell what is going on. But I can’t. It looks like the Red army is retreating from their goal. I guess I’ll have to read about it in the papers even though I am on them. I still don’t know for how long I’ll be out here but I think it will be for quite awhile. We might move to a different part of the area but we will still be in the field.

Well I guess that the news from somewhere in the California desert.

Love
Bob
