August 9, 1942 - Vicious Circle

Sunday Eve.

Dear Mom + Dad,

My day of K.P. is all through and I am a little tired. K.P. isn’t hard here but it is never a very pleasant job to do. I’m rather glad that it is over with again for awhile.

This is the second day in a row I have written you in the evening. This has got to stop as I miss my afternoon nap. You can’t win, if you don’t work you complain and if you do work you also complain, just a vicious circle.

Your letter arrived today and also the carton of cigarettes arrived. Thank you very much for them I sure appreciate it. I’m glad to hear you got down to N.Y. and did some shopping. I don’t understand you not finding a place to eat as there are loads of them there on 34th street. - I knew Booky was home as I’ve heard from a few other sources. Glad he could do it. Reading about it made me remember my furlough. - I think that if a man goes to the trouble of writing a letter for you the least you can do is express your thanks. Don’t you?

Tomorrows payday, I expect to ship some money home to you. I have about $12 in debts to pay back but I should be able to send $20 or $30 home.

I’m going to quit now I write tomorrow the first thing.

Love
Bob

P.S. My mail also gets messed up, it must be this “free” system.

John: Poops took me to see Lionel Hampton at the Peekskill Dude Ranch of all places. Hampton and his band were very good, but Poops got a real kick seeing them and he was drumming on the table with his hands as he always did when he heard music he liked. He often spoke about the concert to me afterward.
