April 4, 1942 – USO Dance / Hat Braided

Saturday Evening

Dear Mom + Dad,

I have stopped in one of the three U.S.O. buildings in Abilene. There is one in camp and three in town. This place is really swell. You have just about everything you can use in of games etc. I’m going to a dance that they have every Saturday night. The girls are just now starting to arrive. I imagine the place will be jammed in another half hour. Some of the girls seem rather nice looking. Perhaps I can make a nice connection. Keep you fingers crossed for me.

The boys and I came in town about 4 pm. We had to wait that long for our hats. The supply sergeant had taken them to put maron + while braid (the insignia and colors of the medical corps). The hats were taken in Monday but didn’t arrive until late this afternoon. Of course we couldn’t go to town without hats. Just another example of army efficiency.

Well only two more weeks to go on my basic and I’ll be through. I’ll sure be glad to get it over with. I hope my new camp will be much nicer; but then it can’t be much worse.

I’m going to close now as the dance is just about to start.

Love to all
Bob

P.S. Best of Easter Greetings to all.
