April 6, 1942 - Army Day

Monday Evening

Dear Mom + Dad,

It has finally gone through we now have free mail. This is the first letter I’ve written under this new regime. I really like it in fact I’m going to write a million letters as stationary is cheap. I’m sending you back the stamps I didn’t use, you need them more than I do now.

I hear that the soldiers pay raise has passed the senate. It doubles the salary of soldiers. If that only passes it will make the army a lot nicer.

The latest rumor going around here is that we may be shipped anywhere in the U.S. They told the technicians in the last training period that they would go to El Paso or San Antonio and proceeded to ship them to all parts of the country. I hope this is true as I might get east yet. It did seem strange to me that they would tell us where we were going. They don’t usually divulge that information to us. However the only thing to do is to wait and see. I kinda have a hunch that the rumor is true.

Today is Army Day and what a day it was. This is really the height of something. They got us up ½ hour earlier today because of it. (6AM) About 9 A.M. we fell out and walked two blocks to the field and pitched pup tents. The rest of the day was spent in hanging around our tents. We did absolutely nothing but hang around there until 5 P.M. when we pulled down our tents and came back. It was all for demonstration purposes but there was no one to demonstrate it too.

It is raining down here and when I mean rain I mean rain. If it isn’t dust its rain and then after the rain mud up to your knees. You can’t win around here.

This will probably be the last time I will write before Sunday. As I told you we go out on bivouac Wednesday and I won’t have a chance to write until I come back. You can write as I will receive mail. Until then,

Love Bob
