March 31, 1942 – An Uncle

Tuesday Evening

Dear Mom + Dad,

Your letter received. I also received a card announcing I was an uncle. I happened to know it before as Adam + Anne wrote me about it. Evidently brother walked in there just after it happened and they were writing me a note.

I also know about Jean’s marriage as I had written her a card and much to my surprise she answered. She told me all about it. I’m just broken hearted as any fool can plainly see. See?

I have an awful tough schedule this week. Our days don’t end around here until at the earliest 10 P.M. Three out of five nights this week we are out until ten P.M. The other two nights until 12 P.M. This all in addition to our regular schedule. I’ll be dead by next week. By all reports we are supposed to go out on bivouac next week for four days. They are really slapping it to us. You see we are doing a 13 week schedule in 8 weeks. After next week is over it will be fairly easy and we will be up for shipment.

I don’t think I’ll get a furlough now as there is no telling when we will move to another camp. I guess I’ll just have to wait a few more months before I get off.

If you don’t receive any mail from me in the next 2 weeks it will be because I’m busy nite + day. If we go out on bivouac I won’t be able to write for 3 or 4 days. So don’t worry about it. I’ll try to write when I get the chance.

I got paid today $19.68. It seems like a million bucks to me right now. I have $1.32 out every month for insurance, so that accounts for the difference from $21.

I’m writing a letter to bother + Marion. Would you please give it to them for me. I’m trying to save stamps. I’ll write again soon.

Love Bob

P.S. In case I don’t get a chance before Sunday Happy Easter!

Bloggers Post Entry Note:

The birth of cousin Lee is what make's Poops an uncle. Memories of Lee from Bobbie:

"Lee's birthday is 3/27/1942 and, yes, I do remember her very well. Back in the day, Lee and I hung out a lot together most notably on Thanksgiving at Grandma Nor's house, and we used to make candles together for Xmas, play dolls etc. One of the most memorable days of my childhood was Richard's christening when we lived in Shrub Oak. I still remember Lee and I got to drink all the birch beer we wanted. Here is a picture of us with said birch beer."
