March 29, 1942 - "...the more money I get and the better time I will have"

Sunday P.M.

Dear Mom + Dad,

I’m going to ask you for a few favors in this letter. I am applying for a furlough between the time my basic ends and my new training starts. I want to know if by any remote chance I should get one, would you pay my train fare back? I could hitch hike in and it would take me about 2 days. I think the train fare is about $27 one way. Just let me know one way or the other.

If it isn’t too much trouble I also would appreciate it if you would send me another carton of Camels. I have about $1.50 left out of my pay. Pay day rolls around Tuesday and I will get $19.68. My insurance for $1.32 has to come out of it. Regardless of what they say the $21 per is not very much. You can just about buy the things you need. Have you heard anything about a pay raise for soldiers? There is a rumor that a bill has gone through Congress to double the pay. I sure hope it is true as $42 a month seems like a fortune right now.

I have been asked to join the band down here and play the drums. As soon as my sticks arrived and I start to pound the word went around. I’ve been approached about 5 times. I refused all offers as it would mean I would have to be here permanently. I want to get out of this camp as soon as possible. I would like it of course, but my desire to get out of here overweights it. However it is nice to know I had the chance. I’ll probably get further going to technical school anyway. I was just talking to Vin and we are going to apply for officers training soon. You have to be in 4 months before you can get in. So it can wait awhile. I’m beginning to think I want to get somewhere if I can. The main reason is for the money. I figure the higher I am the more money I get and the better time I will have. At least I’m going to give it a try. I have nothing to lose.

We had our eight mile hike last week at night and it wasn’t as bad as I expected. It was a beautiful night and we did the course in 3 hours which is good time for troops at night. I don’t think we go out on an overnight hike until next week. I hear though that is isn’t hard either. I guess the answer is that I’m in good physical condition.

Well thats all I’ll write again in the middle of the week. Drop me a line soon.

Love Bob
