March 26, 1942 - Selected for Surgical Technician

Thursday Morning

Dear Mom + Dad

I have some special news for you even though I can’t decide whether it is good or bad. I was just informed last night that I was selected to go to a technician school. I will study for three months in this school. I am going to a school for surgical technician. I will work in a hospital.

They wouldn’t tell us where we were going definitely but they did offer this alternative. We will be in a camp in either El Paso or San Antonia Texas. That means I don’t get back east for quite awhile yet. I will be here until the end of July.

Our course starts on May 1. My basic training period ends here on April 19. I don’t know what we are supposed to do in the interim but I image they’ll find something for us to do. I would like to get those 10 days off but there is no chance for that.

This is a good break in a way as it not only gives me a chance to work up but it will keep me entirely out of actual combat. All of the work I will have to do will be in a hospital. Our unit is primarily a field unit and only very few are in hospitals. In this respect I am lucky. Of course I’ll probably see the war sooner or later but it will be the safest possible place in my unit.

The only objection I have is that I had hoped to get back east again. This means I won’t have a chance to come home until sometime after the first of August. Also it gets very warm down here in the summer. I believe all in all that it is a break for me. It has given me something to look forward to the first time since I’ve been in the army. I’m hoping for the best so keep your fingers crossed.

I’ve had a tough week so far: Inspection, Monday K.P. yesterday, I didn’t get out of K.P until 11 P.M. It was really a tough job. I believe I will only get it once more then it will be the last time I’ll have to do it. I won’t have to do it on the new job.

I started this letter this morning but didn’t get a chance to finish it. Tonight we go out on our 10 mile hike. We start at 8 and come back at 12. All this on top of a full day. I will really be tired tomorrow K.P. plus this darn hike tonight.

My package came yesterday with my underwear and drum sticks. Thank you. I haven’t had much chance to use my sticks + brushes but at least they will amuse me once in a while.

I received a letter from Baukew (??) today. He is in Camp Polk, Louisiana. He is in some branch of the armored division. The camp is only located 15 miles from the Texas border. Maybe I’ll run over and see him sometime when I get a weekend pass.

We are going on our hike soon and I have to fix my pack so I’ll close. I’ll write you again either Saturday or Sunday.

Love Bob
