July 22, 1942 - Cigs from the Jar in the Bar

Wednesday Evening

Dear Mom + Dad,

Since I wrote you this morning asking for letters of recommendation a lot has happened. I fell into a lot of tough luck. You see, we seem to be filling in everywhere around this medical detachment and for everyone. Our company gets all the lousy details you can think of. I feel into a good one today. In the patients mess hall they needed K.P.’s so little Bobby was chosen to be one of those bright little boys. I have to work there until further notice. I hope to wiggle out of it tomorrow but I can’t be sure.

It’s disgusting the way they have fixed us up around here. The members of the hospital (not ours) moved out and as soon as everyone had left they sent in a 150 new patients. The hospital had very little personnel and as a consequence we have to fill in for them. All of our boys seem to be working for some other outfit. I never saw such a screwed up place in all my life and I’ve seen some since I’ve been in the army. This just takes the cake! Enough of that and on to the latest developments.

I took my physical exam today for the officers school. I think that I passed it rather easily there was nothing wrong with me except my teeth. My next step will be to go before and examining board and if I get by them I’m in. Just keep praying for me! I really hope I make it and get out of this hole that I’m in now. I’ve just got to do it.

I received a cartoon of cigarettes today from Arlington. They have a jar on the bar in which change is put for the boys to get them cigarettes. Well mine came in today. It sure is swell and I appreciate it a lot.

I’m dead tired so I’m going to quit now. I’ll write you again tomorrow.

Love
Bob
