Dear Mom + Dad
I haven’t as yet left camp. I can go as soon as I get the confirmation from the Red Cross. The wire seeking confirmation went out yesterday at 4:30. It is now about 12:30 and still no wire back. I’m writing this to give me something to do as I’m going crazy by degrees.
I can get the furlough as far as the commanding officer is concerned but I have to have the money to get my ticket. I can get a reduced rate if I buy a round trip furlough ticket. The Red Cross tells me the round trip will cost $95 including meals. I wouldn’t go except I have an $80 check coming this month and I can help defray the expenses.
I’m very sorry about the whole thing. Of course I knew it was coming still it made me feel bad when I get the wire. I want to get home if possible as I may be able to help you over the rough spots.
I hope I get the wire and get the midnight train out of Los Angeles, the fastest. Then too I may be able to get a army plane into N.Y. which will be free.
I’m very nervous so I’ll quit. I’ll send this air mail and I’ll wire and write if necessary all details as soon as I find out
