July 1, 1942 - A Letter to Poops (from Grandpa Bob)

Among Poops' letters was this one, from Grandpa Bob to Poops. This letter was returned for reasons that will become obvious in the next couple of posts.

Wednesday evening
July 1st 1942

My dear Son:

It is such a long time since I last wrote to you that I am afraid I will make a poor job of it, but here it goes.

Things are happening every minute and each minute we think the end is at hand and then Nana snaps out of it and continues to labor to live on although she does not know anything about it. Every night she gets the needle with morphine sulfate and then she is quiet until about 3A.M and then a sinking spell. Last night at 4 A.M. Mrs. Archer (night nurse) called me as she thought the end was near. A few minutes latter she came back and this was repeated again at 10 A.M. right now she is breathing very heavily but otherwise quiet. At 8 P.M. she received 60 units of morphine. Now for something more pleasant.

Last night I was elected President of the Board of Education which was unusual as the President is not elected until the first meeting in July which would be the 7th. Reason - We had to have money to meet our obligations and had to borrow 50 grand and papers had to be signed by the President as 12 oclock midnight June 30th the board would have been without a Pres.

I suppose by now you are located in your new quarters. We got the atlas out and located Indio in between two mountains in the southern part of California. Your diploma arrived yesterday with two letters Thursday and Friday. Glad you were able to see Charles before you left it must have been great to see and chat with him.

I note that your capital is low - after all debts are paid. As soon as I think you need more I will try to scrape up a buck or two and send it to you, I cannot feel comfortable when I know you are out of cash. Did you move your radio? You have not mentioned it in any of your last letters or did you sell it? I must devote some space to your Mother. I know you want to hear all about her. If ever this terrible ordeal which she is going through ever ends, I am going to see to it that she gets a much needed rest and after a rest a through check up on her ailments. Mother has not been out for a evening since Nana went to bed and anyone that can stand that deserves all I can give her. Maybe I will send her out to you. What do you say?

I just purchased a $5 stamp for Sweetheart. Uncle Sam said if I want to drive you must pay me. That I did. Insurance is also due.

Lee is just as bright as a silver dollar, she notices everything and laughs when you talk to her. H + M are O.K. too.

We expect a big day here on the 4th. Derver is head of it again. The U.S.O. drive is also on I do not know how they are doing but we want $3300. I will do my part. Did the smokes arrive before you left? You did not say anything about them.

That will be my closing message or question.

Love from all,

Lovingly Daddy

P.S. Kindly note how long it takes by air for a letter to reach you.

I mailed this letter at 10 P.M. - Wed July 1
