Wednesday Evening
Dear Mom + Dad,
Please excuse the use of this paper but I can find no other around the place. I forgot to bring mine up. There usually is some around here but we got a new desk in today and everything is in shambles and I can’t find any. Anyhow you will be able to read this letter regardless of the paper.
As you will probably know by the time you receive this letter, today was payday. I sent you home $30 to put in my bank account via air mail so it will reach you well before this letter does. I have $35 in my pocket now and that should be plenty to carry me for the rest of the month. If not I always have the bank account to fall back on.
Your letter and brothers both arrived at the same time in the morning’s mail. This evening the package arrived with all the junk in it. It sure was swell. The cookies and candy have gone the way all good things should. I passed them around and they disappeared like magic. However I managed to get a good share of them myself. The peanuts I’m keeping exclusively for little Bobby. The socks are just what I wanted to. The army gives you three pairs of socks which can be salvaged when they are worn out. The only trouble is that it takes to long to get them after you turn them in. It is much easier to purchase them yourself and save yourself a lot of trouble. Probably the most prized possession in the whole package is the drum sticks. As you know I get quite a kick out of banging them around. I can’t thank you to much for all the things you sent me. I really appreciate them.
I was very glad to hear from you today. It finally broke my mail shortage of four days. I’m glad to hear you may be able to get to Mahopac. I have my fingers crossed for you. It sure will be swell if you can spend some time there as it is really a beautiful lake. I bet it will seem good to be on your vacation. By the time you get this you will probably have started it as Friday is the day. Have a good time.
The case of rumoritis I told you about has really been going strong. I understand the cause for it all is that one of the three field hospitals here are supposed to move out on the 15th. However, I don’t think it will be our outfit quite yet. It won’t be to long before we do pack up and move anyhow. I have a hunch no reason behind it, that the 5th Field Hospital might separate and not as a unit. If anything tangible should turn up I’ll be sure to let you know.
I’m tired tonight as I’ve had very little sleep in the last two days. I did manage to get about 3 hours in the afternoon. Things are a little quieter today but we still have several patients that can keep us busy. I might be able to catch upon a few hours later on this evening. I sure hope so.
I’m going to quit now as I want to write a few more letters. One goes in answer to brother. Tomorrow comes another letter.
Love
Bob
