September 4, 1942 - Conjecture of Shipping Overseas Soon

Friday Evening

Dear Mom + Dad,

Your letter arrived today along with a few others. If you remember I was griping about a mail shortage a few days ago. It sure is tough to have them come in all at once. You write like the devil for awhile and then you take it easy. It is too bad they’re not spread out. Oh well it can’t be helped. I think I can manage to get most of them answered tonight. It sure is funny how my letters come in bunches. I mail them a day apart and about the same time every day so they should come to you that way.

Remember last night I told you how tired I was. Right after I finished your letter we had an emergency appendix case come in. We had to get the boy ready for an immediate operation and then ship him off to be operated on. Then after the operation take care of him. Needless to say very little sleep was had by all. However today I managed to get some rest. I made up my mind to stay in bed and rest even if I didn’t sleep. I did just this getting up only for a shower and dinner at 11:30 and back to bed again at 1. I feel a lot better today for the day of rest.

Today a new and interesting development took place in our outfit. Our command, the sergeants, corporals, etc. were rearranged in a much different manner than previously. I understand we are to get new men in to replace the ones we lost. Reports are that they are all newly inducted in the army and that they are coming to our outfit for their basic training. If that is true that means that the present men will be shipped out and attached to some other outfit. We now have all our technicians working in the hospital and getting the training they will use. The basic men are drilling and having classes. All signs seem to point to the fact that we are to turn into a training company. That probably means that I’ll be shipped out soon. Of course this is conjecture and I can’t be sure. All signs seem to point that way. You see we are in a period of turmoil right now and it’s hard to make anything out of the mess. I’m just trying to interpret what goes on. Of course later events will bring out the true light. I’m watching things very closely as something is in the air and I’ll have to wait to see what it is.

I suppose by now you are on your vacation tonight is the night. Did you get Brahams place at Mahopac? I hope you did as it will be very nice. Anyway, I trust you will have a good time regardless of where you go.

You’re the landlord why don’t you kick the Gardner’s out and move. Seriously I hope you make it by Oct. 1.

I’m going to quit now as I have those other letters to answer. Thanks for trying to cheer me up. As I told you things go up and down. I’m up tonight.

Love
Bob
