September 2, 1942 - No Sleep on the Job Tonight

Wednesday Morning

Dear Mom + Dad,

Talk about being busy you should see this place tonight. It is now 2:30 and I still haven’t had a minute to myself. We have about five more patients come in today from operations. 2 of them came in here after 8 P.M. Watching them and taking care of them coming out of ether is a job in itself. Then there are a few more who need attention. Added to all this are a few babies who can’t stand anything and demand your attention all the time. They are the kind that really gripe you.

The ward is full now with the exception of two beds which are expected to be filled tomorrow. We now have our work cut out for us. I think when I get out of this army I’ll take up the practice of medicine and hang out my shingle. I think I’ll know enough. Enough about this darn hospital.

A severe case of rumoritis has overtaken our outfit again. They’re really terrific this time. (1) We are moving out of here Sept. 15 for overseas duty (2) Our training has to be stepped up as the colonel wants us well trained by Oct 1. They rather contradict themselves so I’m not worrying about them too much. I don’t believe anything anymore until I see the orders or I board a train for some other camp. You know I’d like to move someplace else and I wouldn’t even mind if it were overseas. I’d like to get somewhere where I’d be really doing something. However, there is nothing I can do but await developments.

Today, as it is now Wednesday, should be payday. As I told you maneuvers have interrupted the pay schedule but I think this will be the day.

I’d sure like to get me a little decent sleep for a change. I gather it in snatches. I couldn’t sleep this morning so I went out for a little walk. This afternoon I did manage to get about three hours. There will be no sleep on the job tonight. I can’t seem to get sleep well during the day. If I’m not being bothered by something or somebody I just can’t sleep. Despite it all though I’m not really tired. I was accustomed to a little sleep once but I lost that when I came in the army. Now I’m getting back to old form again.

I sent out a few post cards today, one to Feata, and one to the Devers. I had them laying around so I thought I’d get rid of them. I still haven’t received any mail. 4 days now without a letter. Tomorrow I should get your Sunday letter. On checking back today I found that I haven’t done so bad for mail despite the 4 days lack. I’ve had 8 letters since last Tuesday. I really shouldn’t complain.

I guess that is the story for today. Not quite up to my last two letters in length but. I’ll write tomorrow night.

Love
Bob
