Wednesday Evening
Dear Mom + Dad,
Your letter of Sunday arrived as usual today. Very glad to hear you had a good trip to Sloatsburg and that you’re going to Mahopac. I’d sure like to be out there for a week myself. It is a real beautiful spot. Oh well. I’m making the best of the job I have to do here.
Speaking of the job it is really quiet tonight. We have cleared out a lot of our patients and have no difficult ones left. Things are getting to be a picnic now. The thing is that they had a rush on operations and they tried to get everything cleared up. The surgeons were doing 15 to 20 operations a day and this ward was bearing a good share of the patients. Now things have calmed down. For example there is only one operation scheduled for tomorrow and the fellow won’t be sent to our ward. It sure makes our job a lot easier. Now maybe I can catch up on my sleep a little. However it will just be our luck to have an emergency shoved on our hands at the last moment.
The mail system is sure messed up here. I received a letter from Em today postmarked Sept. 5, that came in the morning mail. This evening I got another from her and it was postmarked Sept. 2. Isn’t that some deal? No wonder my letters arrive in bunches instead of being spaced properly. I think I told you Fran leaves the 15th for the army.
Nothing much seems to be happening around here of late and nothing unusual to me except the usual routine. Thus it is getting increasingly hard to keep up a constant line of chatter. But at least I’m trying.
Most of the boys in our outfit are over here in the hospital working now. It seems that they have sent some over here just to get a little experience. This is very wise and is good for some the boys have never seen the inside of a ward. I’m still praying for the shipping orders but at present there are no further signs. I should know fairly well about what is going to happen to us by the end of the month.
I’m going in tomorrow to see if I can’t get a weekend pass. I sure need the time off to pep me up a little. I’d like to go up to L.A. and Hollywood at least once more. I’ll let you know the good or bad news tomorrow.
Well have a nice vacation but then I know you will. Write me when you get a chance
Love
Bob
