Tuesday Evening
Dear Mom + Dad,
I suppose I should tell you the latest news first. I’ve received my first promotion in this army. I was given the first small boost up the ladder today and made a private first class. I now can wear one stripe and receive a pay of $54 instead of $50. Personally, I don’t think the rating is worth a good gosh darn. In fact I think they should throw the darn thing out of the books. Anyway it is an advancement even if only so slight. The extra four dollars will help a little to! They made all the fellows who were technicians also, thus I’m not alone on this deal, about 25 of them. In writing to me now my new title is Pfc Bobby Haring. Aren’t you just thrilled! I’m not as I consider the rating as a joke. Oh well, it was given to me so what can I do about it. It might just be a stepping stone to some higher rating who can tell?
I received a letter from Mom Gatrein today. She tells me Fran is being drafted on the 10th of September. She feels quite bad about it which is natural. Then too the two kids are her whole life right now. In a way I feel sorry for her but there are lots in the same predicament. I’ll write her a letter and try to cheer her up.
Tonight we have very distinguished company on our ward, no less than a general. There is one here suffering from a case of heat exhaustion. There’s another one for you. Your son taking care of a general. This is all to much for one day. Being made Pfc and taking care of a general.
We are beginning to lose a few of our patients here and there. We have four empty beds. However, they still are doing quit a few operations and that means we have to care for the boys.
I’m going to try my darndest to get off this weekend, I need a little relaxation in the worse way. I’m going to quit now as I have a few more letters to write. Then too it’s just about time to eat.
Love
Pfc Bob
