May 10, 1942 - Mother’s Day

Sunday Morning

Dear Mom + Dad,

It is my day of rest and it is also Mother’s Day. I hope you received my telegram that I sent out last night. I’ve been thinking about home and I feel a little lonesome. I just want you to know that I’m thinking of you all.

I had a good time last night in El Paso. I went in too town right after chow and played ping-pong for a while at the Y and then went swimming in the pool there. It was a really nice place and everything is free for the soldiers. It cost me a nickel to go swimming and that was for the towel. After that I went to a U.S.O dance and managed to have a lot of fun. Alas + Alack though, I made no connections such as Jo in Abilene. Probably by the time I get acquainted around here it will be time for me to be shipped someplace else.

I don’t mind being here as much as I did Barkeley. I have a little more freedom. Of course the army life itself is just about the same but the set up is a lot better as a whole.

I don’t like the climate here though as it really gets hot down here. It’s twice as hot as it was at Barkeley. The only consultation is that the nights are cool and makes for nice sleeping.

I’m going to have to relax now for awhile as this $21 per doesn’t work out so hot. I ran 5 bucks in debt (paid now) by not getting my last pay check. I’ve spent quite a lot lately because of being in a new town. I’m just going in on Saturday nights now until the end of the month and then I will have a little fun when I get my pay.

The first sergeant stated yesterday that our June pay will be $42. I’m not absolutely sure of that but I hope it is true. My June pay, anyway will be an advance as my $30 is suppose to start then I think. I came in the army in the middle of the month and I can’t figure if we are going to get paid the 30 when are 4 months are up because of that.

I guess that is about all for now. Drop me a line soon.

Love to all
Bob
