Sunday Evening
Dear Mom + Dad,
I’m in the army “Y” in El Paso writing this with one of their pens. It is really a sad affair so any mistakes can be blamed on the pen.
I received my pay today I got a little over $22 and by the time I had paid my debts I had about $16 left. This army pay is really sad. However it is good to have money in my pocket after one week of being broke.
I went into Juarez and saw a bit of Mexico and it really is a terrible place. I never saw such signs of filth and horrible living conditions in my life. Right through the main street runs a brook which carries the waste disposals of the city. I wandered off the main drag and that was really terrible. I was sure glad to get back to the U.S. again after that.
I went into one bar to get a beer and the bartender wanted to send my friend and I upstairs for the girls. That is a very prevalent condition in Mexico and the venereal disease rate is very high. You really can’t believe that a civilized world could be as bad as that place is. People talk about going to Mexico for vacation but tell anyone you know to stay away from the place. I’m going down once more to see a little sign of the night life there. If it is as bad as the day I’ll leave within an hour.
It is really interesting to see something like that as it brings before you how nice it is to live in a country like this. I really mean that you can’t appreciate what we have until you see the horrors some people go through.
Nothing much has happened since I last wrote and I want to go out and get something to eat now so I’ll close. I’ll drop you a full line soon.

P.S. I have moved to a new barrack and no more have a private room. I’m in Barracks 20 upper the rest of the address is the same.
