May 24, 1942 - Playing drums.

Sunday Afternoon

Dear Mom + Dad,

Another day of rest and another short note home. I’ve been loafing around all morning, reading or listening to records in the recreation building. As soon as I finish this letter I’m heading for the swimming pool to keep cool. The enlisted men are allowed to use the pool from 10 to 3 in the morning and 7 to 10 in the evening. I’ll probably get myself a little sunburn to. The Texas sun can really scorch you if you remain in to long. My face is very bronzed but my body has still the winter coat of white.

I was in town last night and had a very fine time. I met one of the girls I know and had a fine time with her. Earlier in the evening I attend the dance at the Y and played drums with the band. It was a sad sounding outfit but I enjoyed it. I haven’t played in a band in a long time and it felt good to pound the old skins again. Just call me Gene Kupra.

I haven’t been doing much lately except a little studying here and there. As I told you before we are hitting finals. So far they haven’t been tough. I hope they don’t get harder as I haven’t study a great deal. I know enough to get by and if they give easy tests I can get high marks, hard test, passing grades.

I’m getting awful tired of going to school all day. It is awfully hot and you can’t concentrate and you can’t study because of the heat. I think going to summer school in New Paltz was heaven compared to the heat around here in May. I can picture what it will be like in July + August. I hope I’m not here then.

Only one more week until pay day and then I can have a little fun for awhile. I’m supposed to get $32 minus insurance $2.64 minus about $1 laundry minus $3 coupon books. Outside of those things I’ll have plenty. I sure hope Congress gets together in the 42 per. It really is impossible to do anything on 21 per except pay for laundry, buy cigarettes, and buy stuff you need.

I guess I’ll close now as I want to go swimming. I’ll write you again soon.

Love to all
Bob
